Have you ever had the desire
to make silver jewelry but didn’t know where to start? Are you a craftsperson who would like to
create embellishments for pottery, textiles, paper, quilts, polymer, glass or
stamping? Working with Art Clay Silver is an exciting process where you can
explore your artistic abilities and create unique, one of a kind items. After
you understand its properties, it is easy to use and you can make fine silver
jewelry right away!
Art Clay Silver is composed
of microscopic particles of pure silver, an organic binder and water. This
malleable, clay like material, can be molded, sculpted, extruded, carved,
folded, textured, or stamped into the desired shape. It is then fired in either
a kiln or with a mini torch and the binder and water burn away, resulting in a
fascinating pure silver product.
This class will cover basic methods of working with silver clay, as well as
tools needed to begin creating silver clay jewelry. Learn a variety of
techniques and tips for forming silver clay into unique jewelry designs.
Techniques covered include carving, sanding, attaching silver findings, and working
with the dried clay including kiln firing (will be discussed) and torch firing.
You will also learn several different finishing methods, such as tumbling (will
be discussed), mirror and satin finish, and patina.
Then
using silver clay, a few simple tools, we will make a fine silver (.999)
pendant.
Tools are supplied for class use. The only thing else you need to bring is your
imagination.
You will need a package of 20g Art Clay Silver
650/1200 Low Fire Clay which may be purchased from Shirley on day of class. It
should be about 20.00 to 34.00 depending on how much you want to make.
Additional Materials will be
available to purchase during class.
You will take home at least 1 finished pendant by the completion of class.
There are also plans to hold
further workshops in the near future extending the concept by using silver
paste and syringe silver, facilitating the creation of a wider range of jewelry,
including rings, earrings and brooches.
